ABSTRACT

There exists ‘Hucheon Gaebyeok (後天開闢, The Recreation of the World)’ thinking in the popular religions that have been born in Korea under the suppression of the late Yi(Choseon) dynasty and invasions of the West and Japan since the latter half of the 19the Century. In these religions, we are able to see an inclination for actualizing not of the ‘Euro-American Modernity,’ but of the ‘Indigenous Modernity (土着的近代)’ through which social conflicts could be conquered by the collaboration between the Absolute and human beings. The same is the case with the Sot’aesan’s religious thinking. Sot’aesan (少太山) faced up to the reality that the material development based on the ‘Euro-American Modernity’ united with colonialism, had been weakening human mind and had been changing the relationship between ‘The Strong’ and ‘The Weak’ into the structure of outrageous rule. In order to normalize such reality, it is necessary to reconstruct ‘the material development’ based on ‘the spiritual recreation.’ For such reconstructions, Sot’aesan showed the possibility of changing ‘the social conflict’ into symbiotic situation through non-violence, based on the interrelationship and oneness as an essential concept of Mahayaana Buddhism. And it would be impossible to accomplish such things without enlightened active human beings. It is the thinking of Irwon/Irwonsang (One Circle/One Circle Image, 一圓・一圓相) that awakens human beings to practice building symbiotic society. In Sot’aesan’s Buddhist thought, Dharma Kaaya that means the ‘Buddhist Law/Truth’ in itself, appears as an incarnation (Irwonsang,一圓相), namely, as Heaven and Earth, parents, compatriots, and secular laws, in this world. We can grasp ‘Irwon(一圓)’ as truth by dualizing things and understanding the essential in them. The embodiment of the ‘Indigenous Modernity,’ different from the ‘Euro-American Modernity,’ is going to be opened by those who would comprehend such Irwon/Irwonsang Buddhist thinking. The direction of the symbiotic society aimed by Sot’aesan, has contemporary meanings to overcome the distortion of ‘Euro-American Modernity.’
