ABSTRACT

This thesis examines how reflection and reconciliation between Korea and Japan on our shared history should take place from the perspective of civil exchange and the life and peace movement between Korea and Japan, through a re-examination of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in Naju and the process of erecting a memorial stone. When it was confirmed that the Donghak peasant army was massacred by Japanese military and government forces, Japanese citizens, including Japanese historian Professor Nakatsuka Akira (中塚明), visited the site of the battle, guided by Professor Park Maeng-soo(朴孟洙) of Wonkwang University, through Fuji International Travel Agency(富士國際旅行社) starting in 2006. Since then, the Donghak Peasant Army battlegrounds have been explored every year. In 2019, Professor Emeritus Inoue Katsuo(井上勝生) of Hokkaido University issued an apology on behalf of Japanese citizens in Naju City, urging that the truth be investigated. With the Naju Donghak Peasant Revolution jointly re-examined by Korea and Japan in Naju, the consciousness of life and peace among citizens of both countries began to increase. Accordingly, in January 2023, a joint Korea-Japan memorial stone construction promotion committee was formed, which included representation from Naju, to apologize for the massacre of the Donghak peasant army. This can be interpreted as a life-peace movement in that it is a citizens’ movement to 'sublimate from resentment to excitement.
