ABSTRACT
Is French republicanism in crisis? François Furet, one of the most influential historians of the French Revolution, argues that French republicanism has inherent tendency to become totalitarian. Others contend that its universalism becomes a major barrier to integration of ethnic and religious minorities into French society. The riots of 2005 in France are considered an evidence of this fatal failure. However, this review essay tries to find a way to overcome totalitarian tendency of French democracy and rethink French republicanism without discarding universalism.
