ABSTRACT

As a pivot of the French industrialization from the July Monarchy through the Second Empire in the 19th century, the Saint-Simonian engineers graduates of Ecole Polytechnique laid a base for the industrialization in France by carrying out realistic and practical projects in the fields of canal, railway and finance. Furthermore, they exerted no small influence on European economy and industry. Accordingly, the object of this paper is to examine the industrial project activities of the Saint-Simonian engineers who played an important intermediate role in the process of industrialization in the 19th-century France and their meaning of the times. For this, it is necessary to determine the motive of engineers, a representative Saint- Simonian generation, who involved themselves in Saint- Simonianism and in the Saint-Simonian movement, and their roles, their influences and their limits on canal-, railway- and finance- related industrial projects while the Saint-Simonian movement of philosophic dimension became changed over to that of practical dimension. This study should facilitate a comprehensive historical understanding of the 19th-century industrial France.
