ABSTRACT

Established after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune in 1870-1871, the Third Republic’s early governments pushed ahead with secondary and higher educational reforms to build a democratic society through the democratization of educational systems. In this article, we try to study the responses of the Ecole Polytechnique which formed an antagonistic relationship with the government in the process of reforming secondary and higher educational system in the early days of the Third Republic, acting as the biggest obstacle and their result, in view of several debates on the acceptance of new Baccalaureate system between the Ecole Polytechnique and reformers and the effects of the expansion of the Science Faculty at University on a change of higher educational system.
