ABSTRACT

‘Indochina’, imprinted in the collective subconscience of the French, occupies a special place in the souvenir of complex and ambiguous colonial period. However, few of the various aspects of its history—especially ‘Civilizing Mission’ or social action of France in the colony—are well known. This thesis emphasizes direct correlation between the two themes—‘education’ and ‘colonization’—, inseparable in the principle of the expansion overseas. Education was, most of all, the tool for conquer and domination. It constituted fundamental arguments about the justification of the colonial enterprise through the notion of ‘civilizing mission’ in particular. It is the cause and effect of the conflict between western and indochina education that this thesis places emphasis on more than a century of the presence of the French in the five parts of Indochina Union(Tonkin, Annam, Cochinchina, Laos, Cambodia).
