ABSTRACT

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy wanted to use evocations of the national past, while presenting himself as the heir of national reconciliation. His initiatives have often caused controversies, including the case of Guy Môquet and the project of House of French History. Sarkozy wanted in effect that all high-school students read a letter of Guy Moquet, young resistant killed during the Occupation. This initiative has been criticized by teachers who see this as an official uptake of education attempted by the public authority. The decision to install the Museum of French History is criticized by many historians and researchers who report a dangerous project based on a narrow and backward vision. During the five year term of Sarkozy are very tense the relations between political power and history- teaching.
