ABSTRACT

The relationship between noble and king changed radically, and the literature world grew rapidly and was reorganized for the 1630s in France. As the culture of the patronage developed around Salon and awareness of ‘men of letters’ became raised, Richelieu established Académie française in 1635. That was for the purpose of mobilizing the men of letters for the aggressive political propaganda by integrating them into a system. This cultural strategy reached the climax under the reign of Louis XIV. That the classicism was completed at that time could also be interpreted in the same context. But the establishment of Académie française could not be regarded just as the result of the enforcement of the power. Even so, it does not mean that the extraterritorial realm of the literature was born. This article attempted to reexamine the absolute monarchy amply and delicately by reviewing the birth of Académie française and its meaning in detail in terms of the relation between power and literature.
