ABSTRACT

The feudal land rent was labor rent in the classical manor. The base and core of the labor rent under the classical manor system where lands were divided into demesne and peasant tenures and the former was cultivated by peasants holding manses, were agricultural labor services. However, miscellaneous services related to daily life of lord and manufacturing services which the tenants were obliged to perform, formed constituent parts of labor rent. Besides, tributes in nature or cash which the tenants rendered to their lord, also formed part of labor rent. Because the tributes were produced by the tenants’ surplus labor. The labor-rent of a few tenants under the classical manor system was composed of purely the manufacturing labor service demanding special technique.
