ABSTRACT

September first 1715, this day put an end to the life and the reign of Louis XIV, absolute monarch who predominated over ‘the Great Century’, and at the same time is considered the turning point that opened a new era. In 2015, commemorating the tercentenary of the death of Louis XIV, various events and exhibitions were held and a lot of research outcomes were published in France. The direction and the way of commemorating Louis XIV in 2015 were distinct from the former ones in the point of paying attention to ‘the death’ of Louis XIV as such. Especially, historians reorganized the situation the moment of his death and reviewed his reign in view of that moment. Furthermore, they focused on the fate of France after the death of Louis XIV, particularly on the relationship between Louis XIV and the jansenism that had a decisive effect on the political history of France in the 18th century.
