ABSTRACT

Alesia was made a place of memory by Caesar and Napoleon III. The Roman general, who won the siege of Alesia in September 52 BC, described it as the final battle of the Gallic Wars; in his narrative to show himself in the best possible light, the defeated Vercingetorix played an important role. The archaeological excavations under Napoleon III, which were instigated to find material evidence of Caesar’s account, resulted in the invention of the first national hero. After the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-1871, Alesia became a place of national pilgrimage for the French. In the debate concerning the actual location of Alesia, we can find not only expressions of local patriotism but also conflicts between archaeological resources and written documents.
