ABSTRACT

In September 1627, La Rochelle, a historic port city on the French Atlantic coast and the bastion of French huguenots, was under siege. After a terrible siege over a year and an unprecedented construction of sea-going dike blocking the harbor, La Rochelle suffered tragic defeat without receiving the awaited English military support. Politically, the fall of La Rochelle was a political death declaration of French Protestantism. After this military defeat, the French Huguenot no longer poses a threat to French monarchy. In this sense, the fall of La Rochelle contributed to the strengthening of so-called ‘absolutism’ and the power of the cardinal Richelieu.
