ABSTRACT

The history of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris corresponds to a very important period in the history of science in the West. In addition, it is also interesting in that it reveals the process of institutionalization and visualization of humankinds innate curiosity for nature and the unknown as well as the desire to possess rarities and encyclopedic knowledge in the history of museums. This research examines literature of natural history, written from the mid-18th century to around 1793 when the Museum was reestablished during the Revolution, in order to study the relevant political ideologies and historical logic behind it. Furthermore, the research tries to closely observe the way in which natural history artifacts have turned into media for spreading knowledge and ideology through exhibitions. From the museological point of view(even before the birth of the term), we reread texts by Buffon, Daubenton, Lamarck and other fellow naturalists. The reading of these texts allows us to elucidate the use of the intellectual and material corpus through natural history exhibitions in Revolutionary France, in the name of public instruction and of ‘perfectionnement’ of humankind.
