ABSTRACT

The Songe du Vieux Pèlerin, written by Philippe de Mézières in 1389, is based on the author’s experience as a crusader in the Mediterranean and on the intellectual influence of Nicole Oresme in France at the end of the 14th century. Although it resembles medieval visionary literature, this work is not aimed at religious or moral awakening. Rather, it begins with a travelogue that was popular at the time, explains each region of the world, and then critiques the contemporary problems that the kingdom of France has shown as a bureaucratic modern state. Furthermore, it lays out various specific advice in the hope that King Charles VI will lead the reform of the state. This work is similar to the “Mirror to the Prince” or political ethics, in that it places all expectations of reform on the individual king and in that the author’s ultimate ideal is the crusade. It also shows a kind of utopian discourse in that it presents a realistic strategy the prince should adopt for effective government.
