ABSTRACT

A Study on the Review of Going to North Korea of Choi Seung-hee and her Dance Achievements after thatSeong Gi-sukLecturer in Dance at Sung Kyun Kwan UniversityThis study, which is focused on going to North Korea of Choi Seung-hee and her dance achievements after that, has a significance in view of the review of her achievements on the basis of records in the newly collected ?Joseonyesul (The Art of Joseon)? of a monthly magazine of North Korea. Motives of her going to North Korea can be considered: first, the loss of a base of dance in South Korea under the condition an ideological dispute between the left wing and the right wing immediately after liberation; second, effects of her husband Ahn Mak of a progressive literary man; and third, Kim Il-sung?s intentional enticement strategies to target establishment of socialism.Choi Seung-hee?s dance achievements since going to North Korea showed different aspects by changes in politics and literary policies of North Korea; Neo Democracy Establishment Period 1945~1950), National Liberation War Period (1950~1953), Postwar Reconstruction Period (1953~1960), and Grand Chollima Upsurge Period (1960?s). It is said that she retired from the dance world of North Korean since 1960?s, and was purged in 1967. But, there are a variety of views about her last moment. This study is an attempt to approach this issue from the many-sided viewpoints with new information.
