ABSTRACT

As the importance of copyright in music and movies gets publicity, more people in dance field have become aware of the need for the understanding of copyrights in dance works. To create a dance performance on the stage, we need not only the dancers and choreographer but also musicians, composer, and other artists for the stage. Since dance is a composite art, there is the need to define and give the proper credit to each copyrighted work involved in the creation of dance work. In this paper, three policies to improve the copyrights in the creation of dance are recommended. First, we must enhance the awareness and understanding of the copyright in the field of dance through educational programs on copyright. Second, we must establish fair and transparent organization which can evaluate the originality of dance work and the scope of plagiarism of dance work. Third, we must have stylized and transparent method of registering dance work even though thought the copyright law does not require formal registration of copyrighted work so that we could help solve the disputes if such occasion arises.
