ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the body image shown in the works of Maya Deren regarded as the founder of dance films based on Deleuze’'s theory of image. Maya Deren’'s dance films are noticeable because they contain the beginning of such changes unlike the initial dance images simply recording dance performances. So far, a few researches on Maya Deren’'s dance films have been conducted just to introduce her lifetime and works or to emphasize the expansion of dance expression. However, this study is different from advanced researches as it analyzes the body image shown in Deren’'s works from the aesthetic view by applying Deleuze’'s theory of image discussed in Cinema. The virtual body images shown in Maya Deren’'s dance films discussed here in this paper have the ontological value equivalent to that of the actual body, and it is discussed to expose Time-Image overcoming Movement-Image. The significance of this study is to provide the ground of aesthetic discussion for virtual body images to be variously differentiated, transformed, and reconstructed in today’'s contemporary dance.
