ABSTRACT

After 1959, there was a major shift in French cultural policy towards ‘Democratization of Culture’. Andre Malraux was appointed as the first Minister of French Culture and tried to provide the general public with the opportunities to participate in publicly organized and financed cultural activities. In 1981, the socialist party led by president François Mitterand came to power with one of their fundamental ideals the ‘culture for everyone’. The budget for the Ministry of Culture doubled with Minister Jack Lang under whose leadership ‘Nouvelle Danse’ was created. The current direction of French dance is toward the ‘Cultural Democracy’ by fulfilling the ‘culture by everyone’. While the democratization of culture emphasized the access of general public to the high-end culture, cultural democracy goes beyond it to incorporate access to the means of cultural production and distribution. I am excited for studies following the effects of the democratization of culture in French dance, and I hope this paper will help further those studies.
