AB - This study aimed to diagnose the functions of dance criticism by considering dance choreographers’ perception of criticism that is placed in the center of dance arts as an object of criticism. For this study, the open-ended survey was conducted, and the results were drawn through the inductive analysis. In the results of this study, most of the choreographers approached criticism through various media, and they had the conceptual and stereotyped perception of the functions of criticism. However, the choreographers who experienced criticism of their own works in field, reviewed works based on experts’ various opinions, and also perceived it as a means of introspection. At the same time, they raised problems like absence of objectivity and professionalism, distortion of meanings, lack of validity, and narrow mindedness. Therefore, to set up the value that could be accepted in field, it would be certainly necessary to understand and analyze the object of criticism.
