ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine projection mapping in contemporary dance performance through three interconnected dimensions: spatial transformation, mediated body, and audience immersion. Drawing on a narrative review with scoping characteristics, this study synthesizes 43 interdisciplinary sources related to spatial augmented reality, immersive art, digital storytelling, dance technology, virtual exhibitions, and performance studies. The findings suggest that projection mapping should be understood not merely as a visual effect, but as a performative medium that reconfigures stage space, reshapes the dancer’s embodied presence through technological mediation, and alters the sensory conditions of audience experience. The study further argues that projection mapping may expand bodily expression while also risking the reduction of the performer to visual spectacle. It therefore identifies a need for more dance-centered scholarship addressing mediated embodiment and performative reality within projection-mapped performance.
