ABSTRACT

Samsung Smart Switch is an application that provides features to easily transfer or back up data—such as contacts, photos, messages, and app settings—from an existing smartphone to a new Galaxy device via wireless connection or a USB cable. Recently, however, instances have emerged where criminals dispose of their current smartphones to conceal crimes and misuse backup features like Samsung Smart Switch to manipulate data, making a device appear as if it had been used all along. Therefore, this paper examines the mobile forensic recovery rate during data backup via Samsung Smart Switch. For data acquisition, data was accumulated on a rooted smartphone to grant full access permissions to all internal data, and Samsung Smart Switch was then used to transfer the data to another rooted device. Subsequently, the data recovery rates between the original and the backed-up smartphones were compared, and practical investigative applications based on the findings are presented.
