ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present paper is to examine the regional characteristics of Juam(住巖) area, which is the outskirts of Suncheon Eupseong, as well as the roles and significance of the Nujeongs in the area. The Juam area has beautiful natural environment and has been developed by families. Based on these natural geographical factors, there are ten Nujeongs in Juam area including Sanghojeong (相好亭) which is the first Nujeong in Suncheon built by an individual. Among the outskirts of Suncheon Eupseong, the number of Nujeongs is the largest in Juam. Regarding the owners of these Nujeongs, 60% belong to the Okcheon Jo family(玉川趙氏), and some of the Nujeongs such as Hyangakjae(鄕約齋) are owned by multiple owners from Jo・Jeong・Lee・Heo families. These findings corroborate the characteristic of Juam area, represented by the development led by families. Therefore, the Nujeongs in Juam area have certain roles and significance such as the places for rituals of Moksoksungjo(睦族崇祖) demonstrating the desire for raising the family’s reputation, aspiration for the common good in the hown town through Hyangak(鄕約), desire and propensity to become a man of profound Confucianism, enjoying the pleasure of nature like an ancient sage and recognition of Juam as a fairyland based on its beautiful nature. In particular, the place to recognize Juam as a fairyland is aligned with the identity of Suncheon areas, represented as the Sogangnam(小江南) and Sunhyang(仙鄕).
