ABSTRACT

Oh Hoeng-muk was a provincial governor in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. From February 1893 to August 1894, he was the governor of Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province. He kept a diary of his official duties and daily life while serving as a local government official, and 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 is his diary of his time as governor of Goseong. In addition to detailing the life of a provincial governor of the time, 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 also contains various Sino-Korean poems. This paper identifies the overall status of Sino-Korean poems in the 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 and presents their content features. 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 contains Sino-Korean poems ranging from as few as three to as many as 31 every month. Starting with the first poem on February 27, 1893, and ending with the last poem on November 26, 1894, there are a total of 317 poems as confirmed. Most of the 317 Sino-Korean poems in 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 are untitled, but the poems are followed by a detailed description of the circumstances that led to the writing of the poems, so it is possible to quickly grasp the background of the writing. The Sino-Korean poems in the 『Goseong Chongswaerok』 can be summarized in five ways. First, Oh Hoeng-muk’s official duties as the governor of Goseong and his love for his people are reflected in many of the poems. Second, the landscape of Goseong and its neighboring areas and his travels there are expressed in poetry. Third, there are many poems about longing for his family and socializing with people. Fourth, his love of gardening and plants is reflected in his poems. Fifth, he expressed the chaotic times of the late 19th century in his poems and reflected on his experiences through poetry.
