Research Trends in Open Access Publishing among Early-Career Researchers: A Systematic Review

ABSTRACT

This study aims to systematically review and synthesize the research objectives, methods, explanatory perspectives, and major findings of international studies on open access (OA) publishing among early-career researchers. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searches were conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, and LISTA, supplemented by author-based manual searches, yielding a total of 364 records. After removing duplicates and screening the records according to the eligibility criteria, 24 studies published between 2015 and 2025 were included in the final analysis following a relevance review by one researcher with expertise in the field. Qualitative research was the most common, accounting for 11 studies (45.8%), and the literature primarily consisted of exploratory empirical research grounded in structural perspectives such as career pressure and the prestige and reputation economy. Early-career researchers generally perceived the value of open access publishing positively, but gave open access a relatively low priority when selecting journals. This gap between perceptions and publishing behavior was associated with institutional and environmental conditions, including research evaluation systems, article processing charge (APC) burdens, and publishing decision-making structures. These findings demonstrate the need for analyses focusing on the distinctive characteristics of early-career researchers relative to established researchers and offer implications for the design of future studies in Korea.
