AB - In examining Bible translations within Chinese character cultural spheres, this study focuses on the rendering of קֶשֶׁת (qešet/bow) as ‘rainbow’ (nioron, 虹) in Chinese translations of Genesis 9:13-17. Starting with Louis de Poirot's Manchu and Chinese translation, which first introduced the term ‘rainbow’, subsequent versions like the Morrison-Milne Version (1823) and the Delegates’ Version (1854) also adopted this interpretation. These versions, which significantly influenced Korean translations, suggesting that translators, especially Poirot, interpreted ‘arcus’ or ‘qešet’ as ‘rainbow’ in line with China's cultural context. This adaptation reflects a cultural reinterpretation rather than a strict adherence to the original Hebrew context. However, interpreting ‘qešet’ as ‘bow’ rather than ‘rainbow’ offers a wider range of interpretative possibilities. The choice of ‘rainbow’ can overlook the message of God’s self-restraint by placing the bow in the clouds - a depth of meaning preserved with ‘bow’. Therefore, ‘qešet’ in Genesis 9:13-17 is more accurately translated as ‘bow’.
