ABSTRACT

This study concerns with the mode of the birth of NPOs, and at the same time, focus on the relationship between government and NPOs in Korea with more interest. Assuming that the relationship between government and NPOs would exert much influence on birth frequency of NPOs, the study expects to describe the relationship between them according to the change of the birth frequency of NPOs. Considering dual relationship between local government and local NPOs, some different perspectives on their relationship can be possible. First of all, government subsidy turns out to make positive effects on the birth of new NPOs. On the other hand, government social expenditure shows negative effects on the birth of new NPOs. Referring above results, it can be said that Korean nonprofit sector has been developed depending on much part of political relationship with local government, focusing on government subsidy. Also, concerning with public service delivery, Korean nonprofits seem to have supplementary relationship with local government rather than complementary one.
