ABSTRACT

This study presents the results of an analysis of research trends in public administration, focusing on papers published in conference proceedings of the Seoul Association for Public Administration during the last 30 years. While recent years have seen a number of analyses of research trends in public administration, they have focused on journal articles, and have not considered conference papers. This is significant as the latter offer a more direct insight into up-to-date research topics, current interests, and future research trends. In particular, conference papers contain rough but essential ideas and interests of researchers, which can lead to novel insights for public administration theories and applications. The results reveal that papers about theories and methodologies have been presented most frequently, yet these are not commonly published in journals. This suggests that interests in theoretical research are not decreasing. The results also imply that public policy research is being subdivided and deepened, and is changing more quickly than public administration research. More generally, the results confirm the importance of analyzing conference papers for the study of research trends.
