ABSTRACT

This study draws upon research on media influences on public perceptions, along with the professional literature on cultural property management. More specifically, government shortcomings in the management of cultural property are examined, using SERM as the theoretical basis. While the number of press releases increases each year, the professional literature does not. This points towards the ways in which press releases could affect perceptions of the management of national cultural property. Subsequently, the causes of cultural mismanagement are examined. In the media environment, operations were most prevalent, followed by resources. In the professional literature, operational causes were most prevalent followed by environment and resources. Although there were similarities, the government approach was communicated more through the media than the professional literature. While the professional literature was more in-depth with respect to different areas of the SERM, there were only small number of studies.
