ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify people’s subjective perception types of community wellbeing and analyze characteristic of each type by using Q methodology. This study attempts to supplement the previous literature on community wellbeing that focuses heavily on quantitative analysis and that lacks research on subjective preception of community wellbeing. To this end, I extract 34 statements as Q samples from the community wellbeing model and select 34 subjects of study as P samples from a group of public officials, experts, and general residents. I use PQMethod 2.35 software for factor analysis. The study finds three types of perception: 1) infrastructure-capital-oriented, 2) human-development-capital-oriented, and 3) environmental- and social-capital-oriented types. By identifying these perception types, this study provides basic information for local governments to prioritize the needs of their residents. It would help local governments approach community wellbeing by types so as to provide active and preemptive administrative services, which would further help them systematically manage their administration in general by packaging their policies on the basis of these perception types. In a broader sense, this study suggests usefulness of time- and cost-effective Q methodology.
