AB - Staff are absolutely important for the operation of public libraries. This study aims to reveal how much the 16 metropolitan governments in Korea secure public library staff. Three measurement tools for analysing the present status of the staff of the 766 public libraries in Korea are: Enforcement Decree of the Library Act, Standards for Korean Libraries, and IFLA/UNESCO Guidelines. It was revealed that the public libraries in Korea satisfies 46% of the professional library staff standards of Enforcement Decree of the Library Act, 78% of the entire library staff need and only 44.5% of the professional library staff need of Korean Standards for Libraries, and only 35.7% of the entire library staff need of IFLA/UNESCO Guidelines. The study revealed that the ratio of satisfaction of the need of professional library staff is low and in particular, public libraries do not satisfies the entire library staff need of the international standards of IFLA/UNESCO Guidelines.
