ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of learning collocations on improving English proficiency. The study reviews the definitions of collocation and then defines it as the syntagmatic combinations of lexical content words habitually co-occurring in close proximity. The study reviews and emphasizes the importance of learning collocations. The study briefly introduces the detailed teaching techniques of collocations which are used in the experimental class. In order to fulfill the experiment, two classes are chosen from a middle school; one as the controlled class and the other as the comparative class. The experimental class learns to identify and recognizes collocations utilizing the above mentioned techniques. The results of five written tests are collected to compare the achievements of each class and are analyzed by t-test and f-test. There is statistically significant difference in the achievements between the two classes. It is concluded that learning collocations explicitly improves English proficiency.
