ABSTRACT

The history of English teaching in Korea has continued over one hundred years since its beginning in the last decade of 19th century. In the past time of "changing winds and shifting sands", what is called a cyclical paradigm (to use Kuhn's term), a series of teaching methodology have been developed according to the national policy of teaching English, societal environments, economic status, parents' attitude for English language, etc. However, there seem to have been many dilemmas in Korean English education. Thus, this paper discusses some major issues which Korean English teaching and learning have faced up till now: 1) English teaching in elementary schools; 2) English textbooks for secondary schools; 3) English listening & speaking tests for preliminary college entrance examination; 4) English teacher education, etc. Finally, this study suggests an alternative for advancing a step further toward our teaching goal of achieving fluent English communication.
