ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of UCC (User Created Content) task activities on college students' English learning. The UCC task is to create contents using expressions and materials learned in the classes, and post them on the website. The three types of UCC tasks are Text UCC, Image UCC and Video UCC. To fulfill the purpose of the present study, a UCC task-based instructional model was designed, and a website was set up. Then the effect of learning English through UCC task activities was compared to that of learning English based on traditional learning methods. For this study, two classes (63 subjects) of similar English ability were selected at K college as experimental and control groups. The results of this study are as follows: First, no significant difference was seen in students' overall scores between the two groups, although the experimental group's mean (52.67) was a little higher than the control group's one (49.87). However, the two groups' speaking scores did differ significantly (p=.026, p<0.05). Second, the students' interest and participation levels in learning English differed significantly between the two groups. The method used with the experimental group was found to effectively improve the students' interest and participation levels. These results suggest that UCC task activities have a positive influence on English learning.
