ABSTRACT

The present study attempts to provide an innovative method of teaching the English alphabets to young learners using alphabet stories so that they can have fun and be interested from the beginning of their EFL learning. First, in order to achieve this aim, conventional ways of alphabet instruction are examined. Second, focusing on the actual reading and writing teaching methods, this study evaluates elementary English textbooks for the 7th National Curriculum. Third, some practical alphabet teaching techniques employed both at home and abroad are reviewed. Finally, in order to illustrate the idea of using alphabet stories, creative sample stories for each letter of the alphabet have been presented. Further, the pedagogical implications and guidelines of teaching the English alphabets for children have been suggested.
