ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study is to analyze multinational ESL learners' listening strategies and to offer some applications to Korean EFL classrooms. A self-report questionnaire, the Strategy Inventory for Listening Comprehension (SILC), was administered to 141 college students at a major U.S. university to identify their use of listening strategies in English. A total of 11 subcategories grouped into the three major categories in the SILC were examined and analyzed according to their nationalities. According to the results of the study, the students used several specific strategies according to their origin. The results also showed that in all three major domains,Korean ESL learners used less listening comprehension strategies as compared to students from other countries. Especially, South American and European ESL students used significantly more metacognitive strategies than Korean ESL learners. There was also a significant difference in the use of social and affective strategies between Korean ESL students and South American and European students. These findings suggest that there is a dire need for Korean EFL teachers to introduce diverse listening strategies and encourage their students to use effective listening strategies in order to enhance their listening comprehension proficiency.
