ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide suggestions for the basic vocabulary list and guidelines for textbook development according to the forthcoming revised national curriculum for English, following the 2009 General Revision. The basic vocabulary list and guidelines for textbook development of the current curriculum has been criticized for not including words that Korean learners need to acquire, and causing a gap among authorized textbooks. The corpus-based vocabulary analysis of the authorized textbooks reveals that there are words which are frequently used in the textbooks but are not in the basic vocabulary list in the current curriculum. The analysis also reveals that the authorized textbooks showed differences in the use of words out of the basic vocabulary list. This is attributed to the allowed percentage of using words out of the list, i.e. 25%. It is suggested that the frequently used words in the authorized textbooks should be included in the basic vocabulary list of the revised national curriculum. It is also proposed that guidelines on the use of words from the basic vocabulary list should be carefully reexamined and revised for better textbook development.
