ABSTRACT

Teaching English in English (i.e., TEE) puts its emphasis on teachers' abilities in using classroom English appropriately and promoting students' learning effectively. This study examined teachers' perceptions of how important classroom English proficiency is, considering that previous studies revealed that teachers' classroom English becomes the key factor to the success of TEE. The survey consisting of two parts (i.e., the realities and the key factor to the success of TEE and assessment elements for the classroom English proficiency) was administered to 200 teachers from junior high and high schools. Participants were asked to choose one response to items with a five-point Likert scale. Survey responses showed that teachers' perceptions were found to be significantly different according to several background variables such as their teaching experience, English proficiency, the extent to which English is used, although different subscales of the classroom English proficiency manifested significant. Some practical suggestions for policymakers are presented based on the findings about teachers'perceptions of classroom English proficiency in TEE practices.
