ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using Smartphones to assist lexical inferencing strategies in vocabulary learning. Learning by the lexical inferencing strategies was based on Schmitt’s lexical learning method. The 39university students participated in this study. The subjects were divided into three groups as follows; (1) studying using a Social Network Service (SNS) application for Smartphones (2) studying using a computer messenger service (3) studying through face-to-face communication. The results of this study indicated that the group using Smartphones showed the highest level of lexical inferencing abilities and vocabulary acquisition than the other two groups. This is because Smartphones allow easy access to learning and flexible learning in bite-sized chunks, therefore learners can study on the move. Learners using Smartphones also showed positive attitudes toward using Smartphones to assist lexical inferencing strategies in vocabulary learning. Although Smartphones still have problems to be worked out, it has a strong case for use as teaching and learning materials.
