ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the interactions supported by one-to-one telecollaborative videoconferencing for the development of linguistic and intercultural communicative competence. The concept of intercultural communicative competence is relatively new in foreign language education, but it has become a core aspect in language teaching. The study has analyzed interactions of Korean-American college students learning their target language and culture, respectively, English and Korean. Since research on telecollaborative language learning has focused on learners'interactions between students learning English and European languages, which share similar linguistic and cultural heritages, this study plays an important role to fill the research gap in this field. Although the two languages and cultures are quite different, the study shows that internet-based multimodal videoconferencing helps language learners develop linguistic and intercultural communicative competence in terms of acquiring words/expressions and intercultural elements namely, attitudes, knowledge, and skills of interpreting and interaction.
