ABSTRACT

This study utilizes English movies in listening classes with a view to verifying the effects of content word-centered listening guidance on the listening ability and affective aspects of students. The experimental group contained thirty-six students whose English achievement marks were 16% from the bottom of the students in their grade. The students of the experimental group underwent a content word-centered listening classes utilizing English movies. The students of the control group were chosen at random from ordinary classes and underwent listening classes treatments based on a CD-ROM from the appendix of their textbook. The national English achievement score of the students was compared to check the degree of the students’listening comprehension abilities in relation to other students. Questionnaires were conducted to compare changes in the degree of interest and self-directed learning ability. The results revealed that content word-centered listening classes utilizing English movies caused improvements in students’ listening comprehension abilities and affective aspect among students who were underachieving in their English classes. It is necessary to develop an interesting and systematic English curriculum and teaching materials for all students, but particularly those who are underachieving in their English classes.
