ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of the married immigrants from ESL countries in their English instruction by English major college students and students of life-long education instructorship. To this end, 37 English education majors and 25 life-long English instructorship trainees in C University were surveyed for the study. The perceptions of married immigrants in English instructions are analyzed according to effects and expectation of English instruction by married immigrants, perceptions of teaching situations including class method, content and hours and expected qualities of English instructors. The data was collected and analyzed in that questions of five likert scale was calculated into means and standard distribution, and multiple response questions were tabulated into frequency. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The perceptions towards married immigrants’ teaching of English were positive indicating above average point levels despite the overall negative perceptions toward married immigrants in the Korean society as large. (2) The survey result also shows that qualities and perceptions correspond to the previous researches done on the native English assistant teachers. It is suggested that both the rural area English education and married immigrants’ lives can be improved with the English instruction of married immigrants.
