ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to introduce various practical teaching methods and activities for non-native English teachers of speaking class in universities which are aimed to help improve students' communicative competence In order to better understand students' perception of the quality of general English speaking class, a survey was conducted on121 university students who have completed a general speaking course. The questions in the survey include: how interested they were in their speaking class; how much improvement they think they have made in their speaking ability by being registered at the course; which activities have helped them the most; and how they assess their level of improvement in their overall communicative competence. In addition, this study introduces several new classroom activities including imitative speaking, intensive speaking, responsive speaking, interactive speaking, and extensive speaking, which are to help enhance effectiveness of speaking class. Based on clearer understanding of how well students are aware of the effectiveness of the speaking class they have taken, combined with various innovative teaching methods and classroom activities suggested in this paper, we hope to contribute to shedding more light on ways to help students develop practical and efficient communicative abilities.
