ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of authentic online English writing on elementary school students’ writing fluency. Since students have little chance to use English as a means of communication, a writing opportunity on their classroom website can be an alternative mode for experiencing meaningful language use. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the writing data revealed that the students used various strategies to express what they wanted to write. Quantitative analysis showed that the participants wrote longer sentences with a variety of words. Qualitative analysis illustrated that they felt their online English writing to be admirable and enjoyable. This study provides useful insight into how an out-of-classroom online activity may be a part of the language learning experience of students.
