ABSTRACT

This paper investigated how university students, once they entered a university, reflectupon the private English education they received as high school students. Data werecollected by a questionnaire survey with 320 students attending universities located inSeoul. In-depth interviews were further conducted with 8 students who had participatedin the survey. The result showed that the university students were more satisfied withprivate English education than public English education. They also perceived thatprivate English education helped to improve their English scores in high school tests aswell as SAT but it was not helpful in improving their English skills in general orenhancing their performance in a university. More than half of the students respondedthat they would take private English education again if they went back to high schoolyears, but with less intensity and for shorter duration compared to their past experience. Interview data revealed that the students came to have renewed perception on publicand private English education after they entered a university. These findings arediscussed in relation to suggestions for public English education.
