ABSTRACT

The purpose of the current study is to investigate how EFL college students use comma in their writing to see types of comma usage errors and frequency of the errors they commit when they perform writing in English. For this study, 110 college freshmen were divided into three groups depending upon their English writing proficiency; they were asked to write an essay of two genres (descriptive and narrative) each; and the comma usage errors they committed were categorized into 12 types and analyzed based on two criteria of error analysis (omission and addition). The results were as follows: 1) As for some types (e.g., adverbials, preposition phrases), they seemed to recognize correct usage of comma; 2) among the errors regarding comma usage, they made more errors of omission than those of addition; 3) one interesting finding in terms of the errors of addition was that they made errors associated with conjunctions frequently; and 4) there was no substantial difference in their comma usage errors according to their writing proficiency. Overall, it can be safely said that EFL college students need to learn accurate comma usage desperately when writing in English for effective written communication.
