ABSTRACT

What is musicology? Are we also 'doing' musicology in Korea? If the musicology is originated in Western world, what is its identity? If we imported the Western discipline to our academic society, does our scholarship exist here and now? How and through what phenomena can we know that any one scholarship exist in one society? If our musicology has a future, what are immediate problems we are to face? These questions attempted I to answer in this paper. Musicological study in Korea has been dichotomized into musicology of Western music history, and musicology of Korean traditional music. This means that many areas, such as studies of popular music and world musics, are unestablished as subdisciplines of music study yet. It also means that we academics are failing to reflect the drastically changing reality and are seriously retarded in theorizing the present here. Such an unbalanced and lacunal environment mainly has been due to our performance-oriented college education, making any scholastic activities merely subsidiary and even unnecessary. Similarly in this article were the current status of major subdisciplines of musicology in Korea reviewed and problems that Korean musicologists face now discussed.
