ABSTRACT

Younghi Pagh-Paan is one of the famous Korean composers in the world who is in activity in Europe following Isang Yun. Recently, in our country, the interest of people in her music has been increased through several invitation concerts and lectures. But, except some fragmentary examples, studies about her music are rare not only the inside but the outside of the country. As an attempt for legitimate studies of Younghi Pagh-Paan, first this inquiry starts from Man-Nam I für Klarinette und Streichtrio which was composed by Younghi Pagh-Paan in 1977. Man-Nam I is an outstanding work from her painful and anguish time she thoght over the what of her music and found the answer. And it is also a decisive work that made her music attract the attention of the European musical world. Before introducing the work, a biographical statement about Younghi Pagh-Paan and some important factors forming the essence of her music are presented. At the parts of "Identity" - "Memory", there appear efforts that she reached Korean culture and the essence of sounds she experienced in her childhood and an earnest desire for her identity as a composer. And at the part of "Things of Korea = Things of the World", there are the beauty and sprit of Korea melted in her works, the trend of having a share in reality. And then, at the part of "Harmony= Sound Place / Motherchord(Ger. Mutterakkord)", the important element of her music is mentioned. Following analysis of Man-Nam I and my argument about the source of sounds that her music pursues, the list of works of Younghi Pagh-Paan is represented at the end of this study.
