AB - Until now Isang Yun has been identified as a modern composer who mediated the Eastern and contemporary Western musical traditions. This paper will consider Yun's position in terms of his dual citizenship; he belonged to the emigrant population of the Europe, and more broadly, he was a world citizen. This study focuses on the emigrant composer Isang Yun.
The first part of the paper summarizes Yun's compositional style, which is characterized through the sound "gesture." Korean traditional music and the formal structures of the Western music tradition are married to Yun's unique gestures, woven from melodic lines and instrumental color. Yun's soundscape intends to translate East Asian musical elements into the Western modernist musical language.
The middle part of the paper searches for the significance of compositional activity for emigrant composers. First, the emigrant composer deconstructs the tradition brought from his previous home, and then reconstructs, interpolating with the new tradition. The compositional activities of emigrant composers share much similarity with certain elements found in cinematography. Film art also deconstructs traditional art-genre and reconstructs it in a modern way. Yun's compositional activity can be looked into from two directions sociological and musicological.
The last section deals with the issue of cultural boundaries. Yun straddled dual boundaries--the perceptional boundary and also the ideological boundary between the two Koreas. Emigrant society has an element of disassociation just like an actor, who plays in front of the camera. Yun's removed situation is reinforced by his political exile.
The cultural interchange through the emigrant composer Yun could be as follows: while the Western avantgarde saled the advanced technology, Yun exchanged the traditional East-asian thought with them. The outcome of cultural exchange is much influenced by the economic context and the role of the mass media. In conclusion, the social function of the emigrant composer - Isang Yun included - can be condensed into the media music.
