ABSTRACT

Recently, musicologists try to understand and explain the HIP(historically informed performance) phenomenon in 20th century. This paper introduces some of the recent arguments suggested by leading scholars: Robert Morgan suggested that historical performance is flourished since we do not have our own musical tradition. While John Butt maintains that HIP is a postmodern phenomena, Richard Taruskin consider it modern. Laurence Dreyfus argues that HIP should be a hermeneutic activity that reveals the meaning of the early music and also prevents the fossilization of performance.
