ABSTRACT

Reception history of music applies the perspectives of reception aesthetics to music and focuses on experiences of audiences, neither on composer nor works. Reception history mainly deals with music public's reception on works and performance, theoretical reception, publishing and so on. This paper presents five case studies which employed the viewpoints and methods from reception history. The fives studies are as follows: Tia DeNora's research on Beethoven's early Vienna years, James Johnson's investigation on Paris opera public, William Weber's research on concert public. Kyunghee Lee's investigation on formation routes of music public, and lastly Thomas Christensen's study on the role and influence of piano-vocal scores of opera in the 18-19th century Europe. Although five cases deal with different subjects, they are all related to music public. Through five case studies, we can learn that the theory and practice of classical music was developed in various places. New music public from various background, classes and musical tastes played diverse roles in this development. They were not merely passive recipients, but active participants in creating new musical styles and listening attitudes. Composer and performers could not ignore their tastes and demands. Especially in the area of publishing, they became a decisive factor for the success of new music. Five case studies have shown that reception history could illuminate the spot where the traditional history could not explain and have ignored.
